In order to better serve the global EAF steelmaking community, Showa Denko’s Carbon Division (SDK) has completed another significant investment in its graphite electrode (GE) production platform.
La Coruña’s state-of-the-art extrusion press once again demonstrates SDK’s commitment to our customers, our colleagues and our environment. By investing in future of electric steelmaking, SDK plays a vital role in helping our partners provide a cleaner, less-wasteful future by recycling scrap steel in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs).
Already having a reputation for implementing innovative projects in the EAF sector, Danieli has partnered with the team in La Coruña to make the electrode industry’s most advanced extrusion complex in terms of safety, quality, consistency and efficiency. This capital expenditure will yield safer working conditions for our colleagues, provide the most consistent, high-quality product for our customers, and further solidify La Coruña’s position as an exceptional corporate citizen and one of the region’s top employers.
At its foundation, the extrusion unit is equipped with an enhanced vacuum system that can reach extremely high levels quickly, thus providing a base for the highest-quality electrode from the start. Additionally, the press is equipped with a diathermic oil-heating system that maintains constant control of the press temperature before and during extrusion.
Some of the other innovative features of the new press are:
- Extruded material is automatically cut-to-length and checked for size and temperature.
- An advanced engineering concept for quick, fully automated, robotic die-changes and die storage.
- Ability to consistently and efficiently produce electrodes up to 850mm in diameter and up to 3500mm in length
